Children of Time Review

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky is a truly amazing and innovative science fiction novel. What immediately captivated me was its fresh and unique perspective, telling a significant portion of the story through the eyes of an evolving species of spiders. I’ve never experienced a sci-fi narrative told in this way, and it was so well-written and engaging that I found myself immediately drawn into their world.

The book’s core strength lies in its meticulous exploration of how different biological creatures adapt, communicate, and advance with new technologies. Tchaikovsky masterfully details the evolution of the spiders over thousands of years, creating a believable and fascinating society. This focus on biology and technology sets the book apart and makes it feel both grand in scope and deeply intimate.

After finishing the first book, I was so impressed that I immediately read the next two in the series. While I felt the sequels, Children of Ruin and Children of Memory, were not as strong as the first, they still continue this fascinating theme and build upon the rich universe. They have a sense of continuity that kept me invested in the overall story and its characters.

Overall, Children of Time is a standout read that combines a truly original premise with rich world-building. For its intellectual depth and incredible imagination, I’d give it an 8/10. It’s a book that not only entertains but also makes you think long after you’ve finished the last page.
